Understanding Singlemode fibers

Optical fibers are thin and flexible transparent glass pipes that carry light. They are used in fiber optic communication as they are superior to metal fibers because of their lower rate of data loss and immunity to magnetic disturbance. Two types of optic fibers, singlemode and multimode fibers, are used in fiber optic communication. Singlemode fibers (SMF) or monomode fibers can carry only a single ray of light, while multimode fibers can carry more than one light ray at a time. Read more.

Understanding Simplex and Duplex fibers

Networks, channels or interfaces using optic fibers can be classified into Duplex, Simplex or multiple, based on the mode of operation. As the name implies, Simplex refers to a single fiber, Duplex to two fibers and multiple to multiple fibers, but there’s a lot more to Simplex and Duplex fibers. Read more.

Understanding fiber optic trunk cables

A fiber optic trunk cable links two fiber optic interconnection boxes. These cables have a higher number of fibers compared with local cables and are used in main cableways instead of individual cables. They are suitable for a high density environment that demands space saving cable density as they are capable of carrying a large number of fibers to distribute multiple data channels. Read more...

Understanding hybrid optic adapters

Different types of fiber optic connectors and cable assemblies are used in various applications. Hybrid adapters eliminate the need to change connectors as they interconnect two different connector types such as SC-ST or FC-SC. Hybrid fiber optic adapters are available in different combinations such as SC-FC, SC-ST, and FC-ST and are generally available in plastic or metal housings. They can be singlemode or multimode and in simplex and duplex styles. Read more...

Understanding SC adapters

An optical fiber adapter is designed to join two fiber optic connectors together. They offer point to point connection between not just connectors, but also fiber optic patch cords, fiber optic pigtails and many other fiber optic equipment. Read more.
